Sueños guajiros (Pipe Dreams)

What is a pipe dream (sueño guajiro)?

The most accurate description for this colloquial phrase in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, is: -An impossible or unlikely fantasy to actually happen.

Pipe dreams create an illusion, which will always ends up being crushed by the weight of reality. However, at the time a pipe dream is created, comes along with it a feeling of being able to accomplish anything. A feeling of becoming invincible. At that point, anything is possible and there is nothing in the world that can stop us.

In my works of art I try to represent the strength of this hope that causes a pipe dream, a "sueño guajiro", through colors full of light and intensity, which most often complement each other. The symbols I use are symbols that have been with me throughout my artistic career, representing my emotions. The lone wolf crying endlessly for his lost love. Broken hearts, caravans coming and going. Voices heard in the distance forming dialogues coming from solitude, projecting memories trapped in the walls of our unconscious. A chaos of emotions living in harmony, all in one space. Desire, joy, sadness, love, lack of affection, disappointment.  It is exactly this time, that I am seeking to represent this chaos, these different elements and characters that invade my paintings living together in harmony, through composition. In this work, all elements coexist with each other, interacting with each other. Sometimes to end up with the bitter taste of frustration that surprises us like a slap in the face, when we realize that it is impossible what we dreamed of, that it is a fantasy, a pipe dream, nothing more, and nothing less than just a dream.

Fortunately, dreams cannot hurt us and ultimately end when you wake up. It is the same with pipe dreams. And like in every dream, in every life and in every picture there is always a new dawn, a new beginning, a new reason to dream. There is always the possibility that a new pipe dream fill us again of hope.
